Question

Want to start a kids fitness business, retail boutique that sells activewear for kids 0 to 12, good idea?

I would sell mostly activewear and accessories, like yoga mats and anything that would relate to kids being and staying active. I don't want to start with a too large of space. Maybe 1500 square feet. With child obesity rising all over the world I want to be a part of making a change.

It's great that you're looking for a business that will support the health of our children!

I'm wondering if you'll have better luck selling kids' activewear at a karate studio, dance studio, yoga studio, etc., rather than in a standalone retail space. That way the costs for the space will be lower, and you've got a captive audience of like-minded potential customers. I've spent many hours sitting around waiting for my kids during such classes, as have many other parents I know. It's a perfect shopping opportunity.

FitandFun,

There's a huge 'upswell' in the area of kid's fitness products, from tapes and games to clothing and sports. Erika's idea of in-store kiosks for specialty products could be a good one, it just requires a very special set of plans to make it work effectively.

There is no such thing as a 'bad' business idea. Someone once said the way to great wealth is listen to experts tell you what can't be done, then go do it! It works that way for just about any start-up.

The key is research and planning. Starting with a full blown retail outlet may be the 'right' way, maybe not. It could be that working from home as a distributor to area franchisee's is the right way for your idea. Maybe a combination of both, or something entirely different. You have to go out, find your customers, possible 'partners' and ask them.

Research your market, potential outlets and potential area managers operations. Work your analysis and then choose.

Good Luck!
