I'm selling my business - do I need professional help?

Should I hire a lawyer to do this for me? Or a business broker?

In a word, yes. If you know how to find a buyer and determine the price, you still need an attorney to draft the contract. If you do not know how to find a buyer and determine the price, you need someone to help you with those tasks.

Absolutely you should hire a professional to assist you. Business brokers are an essential ingredient in the sale or purcahse of a business. You want to make sure that your interests are well protected and that's where a broker or lawyer can assist. Their expertise is invaluable just as it would be if you were to sell your home. A broker or lawyer is familiar with the many documents required for a smooth transaction, which in the end will save you a lot of headaches.

It may depend with the size of the business but in most cases its critical to seek professional advice e.g from a Certified Public Accountant to be able to ascertain on the price to ask for. Also a lawyer would be important for the legal aspects of the transaction.
