There are a lot of different things you can do to increase your search engine presence.

First and foremost, I'd recommend adding a plugin called "All-In-One SEO Pack." This will allow you to create canonical URL's and control the meta-data on each of your pages. Really good stuff. This forum thread should help you with the various settings of the plugin :)

Secondly, and I'm sure you've heard this before, focus on keywords when you write. Look at what search terms are bringing people to your blog, versus what search terms you want people to be finding you under, and try to shape your posts accordingly.

I'm not suggesting you stuff your posts with keywords, just try to use them as naturally as possible :)

I agree with Chad's thoughts about All-In-One SEO, which enables you to have a headline for an article at appeals to readers, and have the title tag be something else, for instance, the article could be called "Seven Ways To Instant Fitness", while the title tag, which is what search engines tend to use derive a big portion of relevance, could have more phrases that people are searching, for instance, "Fitness Tips, Workout Advice & Healthy Diet Ideas"

But also, in Wordpress, you can automate getting phrases into the URLs in the admin tools. Go to the Settings area there is a sub-area called Permalinks. In that area, select "Custom Structure" and then put the following text into the field:

/%category%/%postname%/

That will make it so the URLs of your posts contain the category and the post name. Once it's set up like this, simply make the categories and the post names out of words that people use to search for the information that you're publishing.

Both of these answers are very good. Thankfully for you, you're already using WordPress so you don't really need too much additional help as opposed to other people who use another blog engine. Besides optimizing your blog with on-page SEO (all-in-on seo pack and permalink structure), you should also be doing things to create inbound links to your site. One way to do that (although many of these links will be no-followed) is to add the sociable plug-in to your WordPress blog. Despite being no-followed, links to your website will be beneficial.

Go to http://www.onlywire.com/for automated bookmark distribution - you will have to sign up to a lot of the bookmarking services such as reddit, but then you can add a button to each of your blog posts and auto submit to all of the services in one go - great way to drive traffic to your blog, just remember to make chose good titles for your blog posts.

You didn't specify, but I hope that your blog is hosted on the same domain as your company website and not at Wordpress.com, so you can reap the benefits of increased traffic to the blog.
The other folks her provided great info, but I would just like to add on by saying that when creating backlinks to your site, it helps to link to specific pages on your blog using link text with relevant keywords for that content.

One mentioned about creating inbound links. Yes, it will be a great help; one strategy is to search for the right blogs to comment on. You may use this search string:

"KEYWORD" "powered by wordpress" "leave a comment" -"no comments".

You may omit "powered by wordpress" if you don't intend to get only wordpress blogs.
