How do I keep insurance costs down?

Sometimes it feels like insurance costs are taking over my business. In addition to my general liability coverage, I pay too much for worker's compensation and property insurance.

worker's comp rates are discounted when your employees all complete a safety training course. you should also institute some workplace safety requirements. the more you do to make your workplace safe and health, the less your workers comp will cost.

Try to get those policies bundled into a single business owners policy. A BOP usually gives you a bunch of different types of coverage for one bundled and discounted price.

Greetings Tonybuild,

1. Be sure your agent is working for you.
2. Workers Comp. check to see if your carrier (usually state mandated) offers safety credits, drug free credits, your experience mod is correct. In Florida there is a discount based on your average hourly pay in the construction industry. Instead of increasing pay provide benefits in the form of company phones and service, gas and they give you receits, Not part of payroll and subject to WC. It depends where your located. Overtime is treated different then straingt time. Also having employees in the proper class code if you have multiple class codes. If married and both work in the business and your construction class code is higher then the clerical class code for your wife then pay her $70,000 and pay you $25,000. Totaly legal.
3. On the GL side of it be sure your payrolls are estimated properly and not just carried over each year. Also proper classification.
4. Propery is base on the estimated replacement cost of your building. In the down turn of the economy the RC are now lower also. Have a Replacement cost estimation done to see if your over insured. Also depends where you are located and the credis that are available in your area.

The best tool is a good agent. I have insured $1,000,000's of construction premium in South Florida. If your in Florida let me know.
