Volunteers doing work on behalf of your business are typically covered under your general liability, but you need to check with your policy or your agent to make sure.

Subcontractors should provide you a certificate of insurance showing general liability coverage and name you as an additional insured on your policy for maximum protection. In some states, you should also have your subcontractors show proof of workers compensation. Otherwise, they could be lumped in with your other employees at audit.

I hope I answered your question.

I agree with Brent Kelly. Be sure the certificate comes from the insurance agency and not the sub contractor. Agencies are required to be sure coverage is in place before issuing certificate.

Remember all work whether volunteer or subcontractor needs to be covered under some insurance policy. Think like an attorney and you will do fine.

Brent sums this up nicely and, yes, subcontractors should be providing you with an insurance certificate. But as also stated here . . . make sure the certificate comes from the insurance agency themselves . . . and not the contractor.
