Question

Can an employer force you to use your earned time off on National Holidays (Christmas, etc...) when they shut down

A friend at Office Depot in Oklahoma told me over the telephone the company is shutting down for the Christmas Holiday, but all employees will have to use their earned time off. Something doesn't sound right with this. Is there a location on the web that provides clear guidance on this matter? Thank you for your answer.

While you may not think it fair, your employer is within their rights to have this policy. The alternative is that you don't use your vacation time and you don't get paid. However, you should check with your state's Department of Labor to verify if there are state specific guidelines.

Thanks. Question was for my friend in Oklahoma, I'm on the East Coast, and will pass on your answer to them. Thanks again.
